SPECIAL REGISTRATION: Who Must Register?

Certain citizens and nationals of 21 countries are required to appear at an INS office to register for the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS). Failure to register under this program can result in misdemeanor criminal charges and removal (deportation) from the United States. For more information on Special Registration, click here.

If you fit the following profile, you may be required to register in person at an INS office before the dates listed below:

  • male citizen or national of one of these countries: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates or Yemen;
  • aged 16 or older;
  • last entered the United States as a nonimmigrant (i.e., visa waiver program, tourist visa, business visitor's visa, student visa, H1B or other work visa) prior to the various dates noted below (according to country of citizenship or nationality).
